General Assembly II

The General Assembly is one of the six principal organs of the United Nation, serving as the primary body within the UN for formulating policy. With participation from every Member State, it offers a singular platform for discussion on the whole range of global concerns addressed by the UN Charter.

Hello delegates! I am Millie, a junior at Shanghai American School Puxi (SASPX). I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as your President Chair of General Assembly Second Committee (GA2) of SHASMUN XII. This conference is my 13th conference of my MUN career, and is also my 5th time chairing. The topic of discussion is the issue of “Tackling the global digital divide”. With over half of the global population lacking access to high-speed broadband, its negative effects on economic and political equality are compounding. Achieving equilibrium and inclusion can transform lives through benefits such as but not limited to providing knowledge, tools and infrastructures. The United Nations have made continuous efforts to accomplish this goal and to deliver economic empowerment, working to establish a funded broadband plans in all countries.Sincerely hoping that this conference is going to become a trailing memory, I would encourage all delegates to have primary knowledge on all topics! Through our efforts, I am confident that this conference will be able to shine a light on these issues most concerning us today.Looking forward to seeing you all!

Greetings, Delegates! My name is Katelyn Qu, a freshman at Shanghai American School’s Pudong campus (SASPD), and I’m honored to be able to serve as your deputy president in SHASMUN XII’s General Assembly committee.

For the past three years I’ve participated in various conferences – yet this is my first time chairing. All the same, I’m beyond thrilled to be able to explore more of the conference procedures from a different perspective. The concept of MUN has always intrigued me and piqued my interest in debating events of historical and present-day importance, so I can’t wait to pursue these topics with you all!

The topic I will be addressing in this conference is “Reducing workplace exploitation of foreign migrants in the U.A.E”, or the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East. With rapid urbanization comes a vast number of migrant workers in the UAE being subjected to construction labor in which they face intense working hours, bad living conditions, and under pay. I am positive delegates will be able to efficiently tackle this topic and craft meaningful solutions. See you at SHASMUN XII!

Deputy President

Hello everyone! I’m Leo Shin, a current junior at SMIC Private School. Since 7th grade, I’ve attended 10 different conferences including YALEMUN Korea and BEIMUN, with experiences as a chair and as a delegate. I’m honored to be the Deputy Chair for SHASMUN’s General Assembly, specifically tasked with introducing the issue of addressing fossil fuel consumption and renewable energies. Despite efforts by the international community to reduce fossil fuel use with the Paris agreement and other net-zero initiatives, progress remains stagnant. Resistance from fossil fuel industries, limited R&D in renewables, and the high environmental costs of replacements such as EVs are threatening global unity toward environmental progress. While approaching the issue at hand, I hope the conference experience within the GA committee will inspire and immerse first-time delegates while providing space for tension-packed professional discussions. As the world searches for working solutions to the global problem of fossil fuel reduction, delegates should balance the harsh reality of geopolitics while keeping their idealistic imagination alive. Looking forward to hearing some interesting perspectives on the issues at hand!
